Long time no chat… and some not so happy news

Mar 1, 2018

Right when I think I am ready to ramp up and get movin’ on this site, something happens. Either we get busy with home stuff, travel, work, or drama.

Those who know me know that there is an excellent reason why my name is Foodie Squirrel. Foodie for the obvious: all I do is think about what I am going to eat for my next meal or snack. Squirrel because I have a super short attention span and switch gears and direction like a THOUSAND times a day. Just trying to write this, I have probably gotten up a few times (no one will bring me my coffee), clicked on Facebook or Instagram, checked my email, looked at recipes, etc.

SO, unfortunately, I need to update the “About” section of this page. We went through a rough time in September. My beloved Pug, Shiro (pictured on the About page in the black vest) got sick.

He was acting 100% normal, and then one day, he seemed to have a stomach ache. I figured he probably ate a leaf or a piece of bark from the tree (he has done that and had similar symptoms, vet visits, pills, etc). He acted like he was going to vomit, panting a bit. So I made an appointment to take him in. We kind of laughed because this seemed like the typical “Oh, he ate something and now has an irritated colon, here’s some pills, soft food, etc” kind of visit.

The Dr. did the usual exam and thought she heard a little fluid in the lungs. We were thinking maybe he tried to vomit and aspirated or something. So, we did x-rays of his lungs and belly.

Long story short, this was one of the worst days of my life. His lungs were FULL of cancer. Inoperable, incurable, not fixable. It was shocking that he was even breathing. Why do they hide these things?

We couldn’t let him go that day- it was just too fast and too much if a shock. My friend, also my vet, came to meet me.  I couldn’t speak—a total wreck.

We took him home to spend time with him. They said he wouldn’t make it long. He had no room in his lungs. I still don’t understand how this happened so fast. He had just had x-rays in December and had no symptoms. We would have paid ANY dollar amount to save him, but it wasn’t possible.

Here is the whole story if you are interested: Click HERE

His appointment was on a Saturday morning; we lost him the very next day. He was only seven years old.

I’ve had a tough time with this loss. We all have.

Shiro in m arms and Mochi squished next to me in the chair. This his last trip to Carmel, CA, with them together. We are sitting in front of the fireplace late at night at the Cypress Inn. Shiro LOVED Carmel.

I do have good news to share, though! I will write another post so this one doesn’t go on and on and on…..

Peace,
Crazy Pug Lady
